CD23,thelowaffinityreceptorforIgE,belongstotheC-typelectinstructuralfamilyandplaysaroleintheregulationofIgEsynthesisandIgEmediatedactivities.Itisfoundbothasatransmembranereceptorproteinandinasolubleform,whichisgeneratedbyproteolyticcleavageofmembraneboundCD23.ThepredominantsolubleformofCD23(sCD23)consistsof172 aminoacidscorrespondingtotheextracellulardomainofthefulllengthprecursor.sCD23,inadditiontobindingIgE,alsoexertsanumberofIgE-independentactivities,suchaspromotingtheactivationanddifferentiationofB-cellsandstimulatingthereleaseofpro-inflammatorycytokinesfrommonocytes.RecombinantHumansCD23isa19.2 kDanon-glycosylatedproteincontaining172 amino-acidresidues.
