Resistinbelongstoafamilyoftissue-specificcytokinestermedFIZZ(foundininflammatoryzones)andRELM.Thefourknownmembersofthisfamily,resistin,RELMα,RELMβ,andRELMγ,shareahighlyconservedC-terminaldomain,characterizedby10 cysteineresidueswithauniquespacingmotifofC-X11-C-X8-C-X-C-X3-C-X10-C-X-C-X-C-X9-C-C.Resistinisanadipose-derivedcytokine(adipokine)whosephysiologicalfunctionandmoleculartargetsarelargelyunknown.Studieshaveshownthatresistinsuppressesinsulin"s ABIlitytostimulateglucoseuptake,andpostulatedthatresistinmightbeanimportantlinkbetweenobesityandType2 diabetes.Otherstudieshaveindicatedthatresistinexpressionisseverelysuppressedinobesity,andthatitmayactasafeedbackregulatorofAdipogenesis.RecombinantRatResistinisa20.0 kDa,disulfide-linked,homodimericproteincomposedoftwo94 identicalaminoacidchainslinkedbyasingledisulfide bond.
