Relaxin-3 isasecretedproteinstructurallyrelatedtoinsulinthatisexpressedprimarilyinthebrainandcentralnervoussystem.Relaxin-3 hasbeenidentifiedastheligandfortheGPCR135receptor,previouslyknownas“somatostatin-like”or“angiotensin-like”peptidereceptor,andhasalsobeenidentifiedforbindingspecificallytotheLGR7receptor,previouslyidentifiedasan“orphan”Gprotein-coupledreceptor.Signalingbyrelaxin-3 throughitstargetreceptorsis,mostlikely,partofaCNSprocessingsystem,activatedinresponsetosignalingbyneuropeptidesandotherfactors.Intracerebroventricularinjectionsofrelaxin-3 havebeenshowntocauseasignificantincreaseoffoodintakeandbodyweightinWistarrats.RecombinantHumanRelaxin-3 isa5.5 kDa,disulfide-linked,heterodimericproteinconsistingofa24 aminoacidA-chainanda27 aminoacidB-chain.
