Description
OncostatinM(OSM)isagrowthanddifferentiationfactorthatparticipatesintheregulationofneurogenesis,osteogenesisandhematopoiesis.ProducedbyactivatedTcells,monocytesandKaposi’s sarcomacells,OSMcanexertbothstimulatoryandinhibitoryeffectsoncellproliferation.Itstimulatestheproliferationoffibroblasts,smoothmusclecellsandKaposi’s sarcomacells,butinhibitsthegrowthofsomenormalandtumorcelllines.Italsopromotescytokinerelease(e.g.IL-6,GM-CSFandG-CSF)fromendothelialcells,andenhancestheexpressionoflow-densitylipoproteinreceptorsinhepatomacells.OSMsharesseveralstructuralandfunctionalcharacteristicswithLIF,IL-6,andCNTF.HumanOSMisactiveonmurinecells.RecombinantHumanOncostatinMisa25.7 kDaprotein,containing227 aminoacidresidues(fulllengthprecursor).
