Description

Defensins(alphaandbeta)arecationicpeptideswithabroadspectrumofantimicrobialactivitythatcompriseanimportantarmoftheinnateimmunesystem.Theα-defensins,whichincludeNP-1,NP-2 andNP-3,aredistinguishedfromtheβ-defensinsbythepairingoftheirthreedisulfidebonds.Inadditiontoantimicrobialactivity,NP-1 exhibitschemotacticactivityondendriticcells.NP-1 isexpressedastheC-terminalportionofaninactiveprecursorprotein,whichalsocontainsa19 aminoacidN-terminalsignalsequenceanda45 aminoacidpolypeptide.NP-1 containsasix-cysteinemotifthatformsthreeintra-moleculardisulfidebonds.RecombinantHumanNP-1 isa3.4 kDaproteincontaining30 aminoacidresidues.
