Matrixmetalloproteinases(MMPs)areafamilyofendoproteasesthatrequirezincandcalciumforexpressingcatalyticactivity.Theseenzymesplayacentralroleinthemaintenanceandremodelingoftheextracellularmatrix.Elevatedexpressionoftheiractivity,causedeitherbyup-regulationoftheirexpressionordown-regulationoftheircognateinhibitors,hasbeenimplicatedinvariousdegenerativedisorders,includingarthritis,cardiovasculardisease,skeletalgrowth-platedisorders,andcancermetastasis.MMP-3 degradesfibronectin,laminin,collagensIII,IV,andX,andcartilageproteoglycans.RecombinantHumanMMP-3 isa42.8 kDaproteincontainingtheentirecatalyticN-terminaldomainandtheC-terminaldomain(378 aminoacids).
