BothMIP-1αandMIP-1βarestructurallyandfunctionallyrelatedCCchemokines.TheyparticipateinhostresponsetoinvADIngbacterial,viral,parasiteandfungalpathogens,byregulatingthetrafficking,andactivationstate,ofselectedsubgroupsofinflammatorycells(e.g.macrophages,lymphocytesandNKcells).WhilebothMIP-1αandMIP-1βexertsimilareffectsonmonocytes,theireffectonlymphocytesdiffer;withMIP-1αselectivelyattractingCD8+lymphocytes,andMIP-1βselectivelyattractingCD4+lymphocytes.Additionally,MIP-1αandMIP-1βhavealsobeenshowntobepotentchemoattractantsforBcells,eosinophilsanddendriticcells.BothhumanandmurineMIP-1αandMIP-1βareactiveonhumanandmurinehematopoieticcells.RecombinantHumanMIP-1αisa7.8 kDaproteincontaining70 aminoacidresidues,includingthefourhighlyconservedcysteineresiduespresentinCCchemokines.
