MIAisthefirstdiscoveredmemberofafamilyofsecretedcytokinestermedtheMIA/OTORfamily.Thefourknownmembersofthisfamily,MIA,MIA-2,OTORandTANGO,eachcontainaSrchomology-3(SH3)-likedomain.MIAisanautocrinegrowthregulatoryprotein,secretedfromchondrocytesandmalignantmelanomacells,thatpromotesmelanomametastasisbybindingcompetitivelytofibronectinandlaminininamannerthatresultsinmelanomacelldetachmentfromtheextracellularmatrixinvivo.ElevatedlevelsofMIAmayrepresentaclinicallyusefulMarkerfordiagnosisofmelanomametastasis,aswellasapotentialmarkerforrheumatoidarthritis.RecombinantHumanMIAisa12.2 kDaglobularproteincontaining108 aminoacidresidues,includingtwointramoleculardisulfide bonds.
