HGFisapotent,mesenchymally-derivedmitogenformatureparenchymalhepatocytes,andactsasagrowthfactorforabroadspectrumoftissuesandcelltypes.HGFsignalsthroughatransmembranetyrosinekinasereceptorknownasMET.ActivitiesofHGFincludetheinductionofcellproliferation,motility,morphogenesis,inhibitionofcellgrowth,andenhancementofneuronsurvival.HGFisacrucialmitogenforliverregenerationprocesses,especiallyafterpartialhepatectomyandotherliverinjuries.HumanandmurineHGFarecross-reactive.MurineHGFisexpressedasalinear,polypeptide-precursorglycoproteincontaining696 aminoacidresidues.ProteolyticprocessingofthisprecursorgeneratestheBIOLOGicallyactiveheterodimericformofHGF,whichconsistsoftwopolypeptidechains(α-chainandβ-chain)heldtogetherbyasingledisulfidebondresultinginformationofabiologicallyactiveheterodimer.Theα-chainconsistsof463 aminoacidresiduesandfourkringledomains.Theβ-chainconsistsof233 aminoacidresidues.RecombinantMurineHGFisa79.3 kDapolypeptideconsistingof696 aminoacidresidues.
