Description
Gremlin-1(isoform-1)belongstoagroupofdiffusIBLeproteinsthatbindtoligandsoftheTGF-βfamilyandregulatetheiractivitybyinhibitingtheiraccesstosignalingreceptors.TheinterplaybetweenTGF-βligandsandtheirnaturalantagoNISTshasmajorBIOLOGicalsignificanceduringdevelopmentprocesses,inwhichcellularresponsecanvaryconsiderablydependinguponthelocalconcentrationofthesignalingmolecule.Gremlin-1 ishighlyexpressedinthesmallintestine,fetalbrain,andcolon;andisexpressedatlowerlevelsinthebrain,prostate,pancreas,andinskeletalmuscle.Gremlin-1 regulatesmultiplefunctionsinearlydevelopmentbyspecificallybindingto,andinhibitingthefunctionof,BMP-2, –4,and –7.Italsoplaysaroleincarcinogenesisandkidneybranchingmorphogenesis.RecombinantHumanGremlin-1 isa18.3 kDaproteincontaining160 aminoacidresidues.
