Lectins,ofeitherplantoranimalorigin,arecarbohydrate-bindingproteinsthatinteractwithglycoproteinsandglycolipidsonthesurfaceofanimalcells.TheGalectinsarelectinsthatrecognizeandinteractwithβ-galactosidemoieties.Galectin-3 regulatesanumberofBIOLOGicalprocesses,includingembryogenesis,inflammatoryresponses,cellprogressionandmetastasis.Galectin-3 isnormallyexpressedinepitheliaofavarietyoftissues,includingcolonandendometrium,andinvariousinflammatorycells,includingmacrophages.Galectin-3 canfunctionintracellularly,controllingthecellcycleandpreventingT-cellapoptosis,andalsoextracellularly,byactivatingvariouscells,includingmonocytes/macrophages,mastcells,neutrophils,andlymphocytes.ExpressionofGalectin-3 isaffectedbyneoplastictransformation,beingup-regulatedincertaintypesoflymphomas,andinthyroidandhepaticcarcinomas.Conversely,itisdown-regulatedinothercancerssuchascolon,breast,ovarian,anduterine.RecombinantHumanGalectin-3 isaglobular26.0 kDaproteincontaining250 aminoacidresidues,butnodisulfide bonds.
