Plasmafibronectinleveliselevatedinseverecoronaryarterydisease.Increasedplasmafibronectinlevelsarerelatedwithvenousthromboembolism(VTE)particularlyinmales,andextendtheprobableassociationbetweenbioMarkersandriskfactorsforarterialatherothrombosisandVTE.Fibronectinplaysaroleinseveralcellularprocesses,includingtissuerepair,embryogenesis,bloodclotting,andcellmigration/adhesion.Fibronectinconsistsintwomainforms:1)asaninsolubleglycoproteindimerthatservesasalinkerintheetracellularmatrixand2)asasolubledisulphidelinkeddimerfoundintheplasma.Theplasmaformisproducedbyhepatocytes,andtheECMformissynthesizedbyfibroblasts,chondrocytes,endothelialcells,macrophages,aswellascertainepithelialcells.Fibronectinalostakespartasageneralcelladhesionmoleculebyanchoringcellstocollagenorproteoglycansubstrates.FibronectinorganizescellularinteractionwiththeECMbybindingtodifferentcomponentsoftheextracellularmatrixandtomembrane-boundFibronectinreceptorsoncellsurfaces.
