BMPs(BoneMorphogeneticProteins)belongtotheTGF-βsuperfamilyofstructurallyrelatedsignalingproteins.BMP-2 isapotentosteoinductivecytokine,capableofinducingboneandcartilageformationinassociationwithosteoconductivecarrierssuchascollagenandsynthetichydroxyapatite.Inadditiontoitsosteogenicactivity,BMP-2 playsanimportantroleincardiacmorphogenesis,andisexpressedinavarietyoftissues,includinglung,spleen,brain,liver,prostateovaryandsmallintestine.ThefunctionalformofBMP-2 isa26 kDaproteincomposedoftwoidentical114 aminoacidpolypeptidechainslinkedbyasingledisulfidebond.EachBMP-2 monomerisexpressedastheC-terminalpartofaprecursorpolypeptide,whichalsocontainsa23 aminoacidsignalsequenceforsecretion,anda259 aminoacidpropeptide.Afterdimerizationofthisprecursor,thecovalentbondsbetweenthepropeptide(whichisalsoadisulfide-linkedhomodimer)andthematureBMP-2 ligandarecleavedbyafurin-typeprotease.RecombinantHumanBMP-2 isa26.0 kDahomodimericproteinconsistingoftwo115 aminoacidpolypeptidechains.ManufacturedusingallAnimal-Freereagents.
